German medical technology company MEYTEC GmbH Informationssysteme has become a new member of the PRESTO Group – an association of worldwide leading experts in pre-hospital stroke care.

The multinational PRESTO Group has set the goal of developing new standards and innovative solutions for the earliest possible detection and treatment of strokes outside of hospitals. The group brings together medical expertise and proven medical technology innovations from various countries. The aim is to detect strokes more quickly and significantly improve the treatment outcome for affected patients by starting pre-hospital treatment at a very early stage.

Since 2002, MEYTEC has been one of the technological pioneers in telemedicine in the development and implementation of complex stroke care concepts in Germany. With the technical development and equipping of a stroke response vehicle (STEMO) in 2011, a research project was launched that enabled hospital-level diagnosis and treatment of strokes to begin in the pre-hospital phase – literally on the doorstep. The special emergency vehicle is equipped with a head CT scanner and laboratory technology, among other things, and is networked via mobile communications with external servers for DICOM image transmission and case documentation. MEYTEC supplied, installed and networked the most important components for this. After the commissioning of four new STEMO 2.0 units, MEYTEC also provided service and support. A study conducted by Berlin’s Charité hospital in 2021 proved that this new treatment concept leads to a significant improvement in outcomes compared to normal care.

As part of a current study in Australia, a mobile stroke unit (MSU) with a telemedicine neurologist has been successfully tested for the first time. However, further studies are needed to achieve greater acceptance and thus broader application for this new pre-hospital stroke care concept. The concept could prove particularly beneficial in rural areas in the future. MEYTEC’s goal is to help shape this development through international cooperation and to incorporate innovative technologies into new pre-hospital care solutions. “The further development of stroke diagnostics is being driven forward internationally. We are therefore delighted that MEYTEC has joined the PRESTO Group as an industry partner. Many neurologists now see the pre-hospital phase as an exciting area of research for even earlier diagnosis. In the interests of stroke patients and the often associated negative health consequences and social costs, it is worthwhile to start stroke detection and the resulting treatment even earlier. You have to fight for every minute,” explains Gerhard W. Meyer, Managing Director of MEYTEC GmbH Informationssysteme. “Our vision is to help save lives and prevent serious damages after strokes through the development and deployment of innovative medical technologies.”
